Jacq Vaucan is an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation who investigates cases of robots violating their primary protocols against altering themselves. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity. In 2044, solar storms have killed 99.7 % of the world's population and only 21 million people survive. The ROC Corporation has designed and built robots called Automata Pilgrim 7000 to help to rebuild the world. These robots have two security protocols; they can neither harm humans nor alter themselves or other robots. When police officer Sean Wallace shoots a robot and claims that it was altering itself, ROC insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is placed in charge of the investigation. Soon he believes that there is a "clocksmith" illegally modifying the robots. Jacq wants to live in the coast and asks his boss and friend Robert Bold to transfer him with his pregnant wife Rachel Vaucan to the coast. Robert offers the possibility if Jacq resolves the case. Jacq and Wallace go to a brothel where the modified robot Cleo attends and Wallace shoots its leg, expecting that the owner will lead them to the clocksmith. They meet Duprè but she is not the clocksmith that is modifying the robots. Soon Jacq discovers who is the responsible for modifying the robots but the Powers that Be in ROC believe that Jacq is the one to be blamed. If the general audience can appreciate 12 years a Slave. I don't understand why they can't understand the complexity and poetry behind this movie. The premise has the same parallel about slavery and the sadness behind self preservation. In fact, it takes it even further regarding what is "life." If something can appreciate more than you, is smarter than you, can live better than you, what's to say "it's" life is any less than a humans?<br/><br/>How can you not like Automata???<br/><br/>I think there's some kind of conspiracy against good movies. This one didn't have a high budget (only 15 mil) so they couldn't bribe enough critics. As advanced AI and robotics go into our future, this one isn't that good.<br/><br/>The writing is sub-par, with completely ignorant and irrational behavior from several of the core humans in the plot. None of them stay true to what you'd think a real human being would do.<br/><br/>And what's with the mafia-esque thugs? Do we really need fat, greasy, slimeballs toting shotguns in every era of human existence? If you have nothing else to watch, this might be a decent time filler. But don't go out of your way and make the time for it - it doesn't deserve your attention. Even for sci-fi, some logic has to enter the plot, which also needs to be devoid of major holes if it’s not to fall into ridiculousness, and that, unfortunately, is where Automata lies.
